When the weather outside is cold and dreary, it can be difficult to find activities to keep kids entertained. Although the temperature in Western North Carolina doesn’t get too cold, winter storms and cold fronts are not uncommon. There are certainly days when families, particularly those with young children, need to stay indoors. Thankfully, Asheville and surrounding towns have plenty of options for indoor fun.

Indoor Activities for Kids in Western NC

Here are ten ideas for what to do with kids when it’s cold outside in Western North Carolina:

1. Visit the Pinball Museum

Western North Carolina is home to a number of museums that are perfect for kids. The Asheville Pinball Museum features 35 pinball machines and 35 classic video games, making it an ideal activity that children of all ages and their parents will enjoy.

2. Check Out a Trampoline Park

Launch Trampoline Park in Arden offers a variety of trampoline-based activities, such as dodgeball, basketball, an arcade, and a ninja obstacle course. Their indoor sports arena is available for leagues, tournaments, rentals, and free play.

3. Go Bowling

Bowling is a classic indoor activity that kids love. Western North Carolina has several bowling alleys, including Sky Lanes and AMF Star Lanes in Asheville and Tarheel Lanes in Hendersonville.

4. Visit a Children’s Museum

The Asheville Museum of Science has hands-on, interactive exhibits and provides ample learning opportunities, especially for those ages 3 to 12. The Hands On! Children’s Museum in Hendersonville has 13,000 square feet of educational exhibits for kids ages 1-10 and offers imaginative learning experiences in a safe, welcoming, and fun environment.

5. Go to the Movies

When there’s bad weather, there’s nothing like curling up in a cozy movie theater to watch a film. Western North Carolina has several theaters to choose from, including the Regal Biltmore Grande Stadium 15 and the Carolina Cinemark in Asheville. For a dine-in movie theater with a full food and drink menu, check out Asheville Pizza and Brewing in North Asheville.

6. Explore an Indoor Playground

Indoor playgrounds are a great way for kids to burn some energy, even when it’s cold outside. We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym is a place where children of all abilities can play together. Their equipment is specially designed for those with sensory processing disorders in mind.

Mountain Play Lodge offers a variety of indoor playground equipment and open play times for children under 12 years old. The PlaySpace AVL is an indoor play area specifically for toddlers and preschoolers.

7. Go to the Library

Libraries help kids to discover new books and engage in educational activities. There are public libraries in and around Asheville, each of which has family-friendly programs such as story times, book clubs, and lego builders clubs.

8. Go Skating

Smoky Mountain Sk8way, located in Waynesville, is a family entertainment center with a roller skating rink, inflatables, an obstacle course, and an 18-hole mini golf course. In addition, they offer day camps, after-school programs, and field trips throughout the year.

RAD Skatepark is an indoor skate park located in the Asheville River Arts District. Parents can drop off their children so they can enjoy supervised skate time or stay to watch them skate. RAD also offers private skateboarding lessons and skate camps, with structured camp activities in the mornings followed by supervised skate times the rest of the day.

9. Do an Escape Room

Fox-N-Otter Adventure Escapes has escape rooms specifically geared towards children and pre-teens ages 8-14, but all of their rooms are family-friendly.

10. Play Laser Tag

Laser tag is an indoor activity but still keeps kids moving. At Black Mountain Adventure Zone, groups can schedule a time to come and play laser tag in our glow arena.

Other activities available at Black Mountain Adventure Zone include Gellyball (a low-impact game that uses battery-powered blasters to launch gel orbs at targets or at other players), Battle Cage (a sword fighting game that is fun to play and watch), and virtual reality games and escape rooms.
